iPod app could reduce emissions from food production
Article Date: Monday 15th February 2010
A new iPod application (app), developed in Scotland with the aim of minimising food waste, has so far been a success with consumers.
If the app's success continues, it could go someway to preventing the equivalent of 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, according to Love Food Hate Waste.
The food waste app has received over 14,500 downloads since its launch and has spent some time among the top ten downloads.
Dundee based developers Waracle Ltd are responsible for the program which is backed by the national Love Food Hate Waste campaign.
More than two-thirds of Scottish food waste from households could be avoided if more effective planning, storage and management were used.
The new iPod app offers tools such as a portion size planner, a recipe finder, weekly meal planners and various hints and tips on how to reduce food wastage.
Meat, fish, dairy and fresh fruit and vegetables are among the most wasted food items in Scottish households.
